Jim Brasen

Not mailed, but they are strung out all over every surface of my house!  I have 400 NATCHes and over 1000 Extended medals ready to be labeled and sent... if you have some spare time you can come and stuff envelopes and put postage on them!  Otherwise it will get done by me as soon as I can get through them!

If anyone has changed their mailing address and hasn't notified the office, now it the time...

We only mail awards once for free, if they get returned then you get to pay your own postage the second time!

Hi Sharon,
Does that mean the snail mail address in our member section on the forum?  Or do you have a different database?  We moved in July and had the address changed on the forum (which is now current).
Thanks for getting it all done!  Sounds like quite an undertaking...

Title: Special Awards history
Post by: Sharon Nelson on December 16, 2012, 12:17:53 PM
Hi, group.
Just a short history of the special awards that can be earned in NADAC.  We started our Special Awards program as "I" want to acknowledge those that have acheivements with their dogs that are a combination of many classes....... that says something that is above and beyond the individual qualifying runs.

Agility flourished and all was well... then the awards started getting to be more and more as NADAC grew and grew, but that was good too!!  Then the costs started to get out of line and we started doing some research.... we changed awards companies and our yearly savings the first year after the changes was $86,000!!  Life was good and the awards program continued onward!  There was a LOT of complaints when we switched companies because the awards were now "different" and didn't match with the older awards.  It took a couple of years and everyone was happy again... well, not everyone... some people quit NADAC because their awards were different and it upset them.

We continued and the number of people in NADAC grew and grew and with it the awards numbers grew and grew.  Life was good.  Then the economy started to take a dump, but even though entries started to drop, the cost of awards started to increase... awards companies needed more money for the awards, engraving prices increased and postage went sky high.  In 2007, when it came time to process awards, I took out a second mortgage to cover the awards and the postage.... life is good....  In 2008, entries dropped more and costs increased.... so we re-financed the mortgage and continued onward.  When 2009 rolled around, I borrowed $32,000 from a friend to cover the postage for the 2008 awards and all was good.  In 2010, I borrowed $28,000 from my mom for the postage for the 2009 awards and we continued onward.  For 2011, I borrowed $27,000 to cover the postage from another friend to mail the 2010 awards.  I continued to pay off the mortgages and the loans.  Then at the end of 2011, I could no longer make the payments owed and no way to take on another loan for the 2011 awards.  So we stopped sending awards and announced that the program was on hold.  So no awards earned from August 2010 and throughout 2011 were processed.  But it was too late and we lost the house but not the bills.... I ended up selling the OK property for $200,000 less than what was owed on it and I refinanced my life so that the bank owns everything and I own nothing.... and I continue to pay off the personal loans from years earlier.  And life goes on.
Entries are now climping rapidly and growth is great!  So back to processing awards!!  Again I had to change awards companies and again there are people who will quit NADAC because the awards don't match previous awards.  And yes, there are many, many people who are very upset that they haven't received their awards.
But there is no one more upset than me............ I LOVE sending those awards....... everyone around me begs me to quit processing awards, but it is a huge part of what I am proud of with those that compete in NADAC.... when I spend those weeks looking at those names and seeing those packages going out the door, I swell with pride and a sense of accomplishment that I have created a venue that so many participate in and that they have risen to the levels required for those awards.  I am so proud of every dog and handler team who walks into the ring and earns another notch towards one of those awards.

Right now there is no space in the house that isn't covered in awards and medals!!  It is beautiful!

I am processing all of the Extended titles medals and they will start going out Monday.  I am processing the NATCHes and Versatility NATCHes for all NADAC associates.  As soon as those are done, I will start on the Versatility Awards and Triple Superiors for NADAC associates.   Then will be the Lifetime Points awards for associates.  Then I will finish off the All Around awards, the Superior Versatility awards and the Triple Triples.

The Platinum Speed Stars and the Triple Superior Versatility awards will remain the same as the older style awards.

As soon as those are done, I will start right back over again with the awards for non-associates.

I know that there are people that are upset over not receiving awards.  There HAS to be, since there are over 4,000 to be processed right now!!  But I currently have 1,300 of those spread around my house so that will help some.

But through some of the tough times in the past year I have come to realize that I can only do what I can and I can't stress over the things that I cannot change, no matter how much I want to!!

I WILL get the awards all completed and stay up to date once done............ I have learned many things and during 2013 I will have all of my personal loans paid off.  We will never recover from the loss of the OK property but the burn from that will continue to lessen as time goes on.

Bottom line, I will do what I can and I do NOT want to ever discontinue the awards program,.......... it is so much of what makes me feel so good about NADAC and so proud of the dogs and handlers within it.

Thanks to everyone for their patience while we get back on our feet and learn how to walk and then run again with our awards program!!

:o I am totally stunned/ shocked that people would quit NADAC , due to a change in award manufacturers.

In to days world in order to survive you have to make financial decisions that keep you afloat. We all know that it is common practice with businesses all over the WORLD.

Yes I would be disappointed that my awards did not match, but I would understand the reasons WHY.

Just my 2 cents.

Sharon, Sharon, oh dear Sharon...........words completely fail me.

I must admit I enjoy the NADAC special awards.  As I sit here I can look up from my desk and see Dillon's NATCH plaque and Bravo's Versatility NATCH plaque.  And if I turn around I can see their 1,000 point awards on the fireplace mantle.

They represent many treasured memories of fun times spent with my wonderful agility partners and all the people and dogs we came to know along the journey (including you).  But they are NOT worth you taking out loans and losing your home over. Anyone who can read your post and still whine about the quality or lateness of awards............they need to take a serious look at their priorities.

I've gotten NADAC plaques that NADAC provided, and NADAC plaques that I paid for, the past couple of years. I didn't mind absorbing the cost while things got out of hand, and would be happy to continue to pay, as long as I can, so that those who can't, would get them from  NADAC.  I figure a NATCH plaque is the equivalent of a day's entry for one dog, so we'll just take that day off and admire the hardware. My dogs AND their awards are all in my office here, and when I am on a long conference call, in the deep of dark winter, it all gives me a great smile, thinking back on the Weavers or Chances courses where we conquered our challenges on those days.

I am now envisioning Sharon up to her couch cushions in  awards and knowing that she'd go broke again if we let her.  So let's not let her.  Thank you, Sharon. The feeling you get surrounded by awards is multiplied as they are received.

Happy to keep paying and won't question those who can't.
Each to their own!

Chris

Sharon . . .

I CAN'T . . . because I've done many things in my lifetime that others, including my wife, Barb, thought were personally and fiscally irresponsible; but they brought me joy, satisfaction and a sense of "completeness" . . . or whatever . . .

. . . but there DOES come a time where there are other considerations . . .

We have NO heirs . . . so all of our debts become the problem of the state of Ohio and the federal government upon our demise . . . such is NOT the case with you and yours . . . then again, I'm NOT at all versed in Oregon law . . .

Neither Barb nor I can speak for anyone else; but EVERY award, minor as they may be, that our kids have earned in NADAC has been WAY MORE ELEGANT than those from ANY OTHER registry!!! . . . our kids have two types of XT award medallions so far and both are GORGEOUS, treasured and valued!!!

We would be TOTALLY happy if we could simply hit "PRINT" and print our kids' awards!!!  It's SO NOT the physical representation of the award that matters!!!  It's the fact that NADAC offers a "reward system" than enables teams to earn that "alphabet soup"!!!  Simply being able to add those letters and numbers to our kids' alphabet soup is more than sufficient for us and ours!!!

The LAST thing that I want to do is "rain on your happiness parade"; but keep it all in perspective . . . i seriously doubt than any NADAC competitor is mortgaging their life in pursuit of an award . . . don't mortgage your life and security . . . PLEASE . . .

Just us,

You are a good woman, Sharon.  The fact that there are so many opportunities for folks to earn recognition for different achievements speaks volumes about what you want for every team out here and I feel so lucky that you created all of this.  Every now and then, we need to take stock of what really does matter though.  You need to take care of you first.

Sharon,

I agree with Laurie.  The awards are wonderful, but I feel terrible that you had to go through that financial situation because of our awards.  We certainly appreciate them but not at the expense of your livelihood.  I'm glad you shared this information with us.

Hi, group.
Please don't take my previous post as "negative"..... it certainly wasn't meant to be!  I was trying to express how much it meant to be to get those awards processed and in the past I have been "stupid" as to the extremes I would do to get those awards sent.  Then I got "smarter" and the awards has to stop for a couple years while we re-grouped!!  I am so excited and happy to be back processing awards again!  I would feel horrible if anyone had even the most remote sense of guilt over receiving awards.... the problems we had were caused by me making some bad decisions........ but never had I ever regretted the processing of awards!

Entries are booming and the upcoming year looks GREAT!

We will be back next year with weekly training camps in Bend, so Becky, Amanda, Chris and I will be offering lots of help to anyone who wants to come and spend a few days in Bend...

We will also be having a trial almost every weekend, as we are not in conflict with anyone!!  There are a couple clubs within 300 miles, but our locations certainly cannot take away entries from any exisiting club.... we are rather remote and away from everyone!

So once the snow leaves and the weather warms up in the spring, Bend will be a VERY active agility area!  Come one, come all and enjoy beautiful Bend!!

I am also SOOO happy with the online seminar group.... it has been a blast doing videos 3-4 days a week and talking about training, behaviors and just getting in-sync with your dogs!!  We have such a great group of people in our group!

So life is good and I am taking on the new year with gusto and enthusiasm!  For anyone who is upset with NADAC, I have no guilt over that........ I have done everything worldly possible to give the best we can give and we will continue doing that.  I wish everyone the best and I truly hope that 2013 will be the best ever for everyone!

Happy holidays and cheers to all!!  When you get your awards, I hope you are as proud of them as I am!

I started agility in 2010 so never received awards while awards were on hiatus.  During that time Journey earned several awards.  I was excited to get them so I purchased them recently. They are beautiful and well worth the small amount I was charged.  As long as I am able I will purchase mine to lessen the burden so someone who otherwise may not be able to afford them can receive them from you.  Anyone who leaves NADAC because they didn't receive their awards is just plain silly.

I just wanted to add how much I appreciate that NADAC has so many "tracks", so that all kinds of teams kind find a goal that "fits" - I may not be on track for a NATCH but am very proud that my Heather has achieved 1000 lifetime points- not a lot for some folks but it represents a lifetime of growth and teamwork for us.  And my little Rosie who has bad elbows has been able to enjoy a career in the the non jumping classes.  I will look forward to Heather's special award when it comes, but just wanted to say thank you for all the opportunities,

Whoa!  Your personal sacrifice astounds me!  I love our past awards but surely would have purchased them if I had known of this circumstance or would have been very happy with the print out.  We are NADAC folks.  Times get rough again for NADAC, pls let us know.  We'll step-up-to-the-plate!

A fancy award is nice but the true awards are in our hearts and memories.

Last year I contacted Becky for a price list for awards, and I did pay for some of the awards my dogs had earned in the past couple of years. I complained the whole time!  Yes,  you can insert the "B" word if you want to.  I had NO IDEA what was actually going on in the background - if we, as a NADAC group had known,  perhaps Sharon wouldn't have had to mortgage her life - that makes me very sad.

Sharon - is it possible you could post a cost list of the awards, and contact info, for those who are willing to pay for them ?

I would also be interested in sending a contribution to offset cost of awards.

Another idea I'll use with my Novice dog Dazzle is to just add her name to some of the awards that Sophie and Snickers have earned. I can just add her name alongside theirs to the nice awards we have sitting on the desk.  Saves space too.
