Title: NADAC Video Run Challenge!
Post by: Amanda Nelson on May 11, 2020, 09:23:22 PM
NADAC Video Run Challenge Event

On May 16-17 NADAC will be hosting its first ever Video Run Challenge Event and runs from the event will be streamed by 4 Legged Flix!

Below is a break down of details for the event:

Challenge winners are based on their wither height for the NADAC Championships, so the divisions will be Mini, Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large. There will be no separate divisions for Veteran, Junior Handler, or Veteran Handler.

There will be winners for the Regular Challenge which will consist of four rounds of Regular and there will be winners for the Jumpers Challenge, which will consist of 4 rounds of Jumpers.

Courses will be Elite level, any Qís earned will go towards Elite titles. If you are not in Elite these Qís are saved in your Elite points.

Scoring will be the same as Championships, Time plus Faults.

If your run was not clean or a ďQĒ, the run can still be submitted for scoring for the challenge.

Course maps for the Video Run Challenge will be posted on Thursday May 14th and all runs for the Challenge must be submitted by Noon PST on Tuesday May 19th.

The Regular courses will only be using an Aframe as the contact and will be in as small of a space as we can. More info on equipment and ring sizes will be posted later this week. The courses will be double run, so you can run the first course twice, and then the second course twice for your four total runs.

Runs from this event will be streamed by 4 Legged Flix after the event is over!

Below is a video addressing some questions and more information on the event. :-D

You state there will be 4 Jumpers runs.  Does this mean the Jumpers course will be run twice one way and then reversed for the third and fourth run?

The course may not be a direct reversal, but a re-number. But yes, the first course would be ran twice and the second course also ran twice for a total of 4 rounds.

If you dont want to run for the challenge can you just and submit a couple of runs for Qs?  I have a dog who is rehabbing and up to running courses but probably not 4 of them.

Thanks,

Do you have any idea "when" you will be posting the courses on Thursday?  Over here in VA, we are expecting really hot weather Thursday - Sunday and storms Saturday - Tuesday, so there's just a small window for running.

Will these runs also count towards a NATCH? Thanks.

Yep, these are just Regular and Jumpers courses, so Q's earned will go into your points file! :-)

Ditto on the timing question!  Oklahoma has thunderstorm forecast all weekend so our window is really short to run.  I'm hoping you release Thursday early so we can run before it gets hot and before the storms...

The courses should be available early morning on Thursday, I am not sure of an exact time as I have to send them off to be uploaded. :-)

I agree. I'm so glad this option is available to many. The rest of us will try not to turn too green; with envy.   ;)

We also have rain forecast. What is the window for actually running these? They are up now, can we run  today? Monday?

Thanks, this is a Super fun idea.

No reason why those without contacts canít just compete in the Jumpers! Just do it! Wish you could come to my place for the contacts. I live in LA. Lower Alabama!

I am super new to how champs is scored - and it was said that clean runs would get a Q for the elite level - but with it being time+faults, is there a course time limit still like usual?
jump heights - so this is different too, I was reading the 2020 info sheet and it isn't 100% clear. We run 16" (skilled). wither height 19". So this means she is large, does that mean she has to jump the 22"? Which is confusing as I thought max was 20" in nadac now.

Hopefully I can make this simple...  Think of the VT Challenge  and VT runs as two different hats - but only one run.  With your VT run hat on, the run is no different than any other VT run.  Just like all of the other VTs you run and submit.  There is a standard course time you have to meet or beat (as well as be clean) to get a Q.

Now think about the VT Challenge Hat. Even though it's the exact same run you just ran with your VT hat on, it is scored differently than a standard VT run. Throw out a required standard course time.  It doesn't apply.  So your dog still jumped at the same height as he always does. But there's no different time requirement by height like there is for normal runs.  Time is time - no matter how tall or small the dog.

So here's how it's scored ...  All dogs start with a score of 150 points.  Then their time is deducted from that.  Then their faults are deducted from that and - voila - you have a finished "score."  It's not a Q - it's just a # that represents their score.  So if your dog ran clean and ran the course in 45 seconds, then your score would be 105.  If some other dog runs the course in 35 seconds, but has a 10 point fault, then their score is also 105.

So all dogs are judged by their final score.  And they are GROUPED for placement by their size.  Not their jump height - but their measured proficient height.  So a 21" dog that jumps 12 inches is still grouped with all other dogs that are in that Large Height category.  (I think those heights and categories are listed in another forum post.). And a dog that measures 19" and jumps 16" is STILL grouped with all other dogs in the Large Height category.  And the winners of those categories get the prize/bragging rights.  So even though your 21" dog jumps 12", he is not competing against the dog who's standard proficient jump height is ACTUALLY 12".  That dog is competing against other dogs that have the same proficient height as he does.

What it comes down to strategy-wise is this:  you have to figure out if it's better to run "steady" and minimize faults, or go pedal to the metal and risk having faults deduced from your faster time.  You will see all combinations at Champs.  Winners are usually a mix of really fast dogs who might (or might not) have a fault or two here and there - versus dogs who are not quite as fast - but make few if any mistakes.

Hope this helps.

Ahhh gotcha!
That makes sense ty

So followup: since im used to clean or not: say dog knocks a bar for a jump that is to be taken again later. Is that like a doublefault then bc they cant take it again? And we dont have bar setters.
Title: Re: NADAC Video Run Challenge!
Post by: Carole & Pat Daggett on May 15, 2020, 03:50:17 PM
Just like at a regular trial, you are not double-faulted if your dog knocks a bar on the first time through.  The dog just needs to go between the uprights of the previously faulted jump to have "completed" the jump the second time through.

The only thing I'd add to Marcy's description, is Normally if you've gone off course, or been overtime, most of us wouldn't submit that run since it's with your VT hat on, an NQ or not qualifying run. You still submit it for the Challenge since the Overall score and ranking is based on Time + Faults.  That piece alone adds a bit of suspense to the mix.  A few of us have done the challenge and we're hoping the weather holds out for Sunday so we can do the Regular Challenge.

This was super fun, and DDare was deliriously happy to run a whole course--twice!  And we beat the rain.
I have uploaded, but wasn't sure how to label the course or division, etc. so I hope you can figure it out. You know us. Maybe turn the volume down LOL

Thanks, looking  forward to round 3 and 4.

PS please ignore the lumbering handler with quarantine hair.  <grin>

Without the labels for the challenge in the submit system, want our dog's actual wither height like in the title of video or such?
Like the video title of: Jumpers - Round 1 - 19"

if you're doing the VT Jumpers challenge you enterit  is as Elite Jumpers and VT Jumpers Challenge as the course name

Them in the round menu simply 1,2,3,4 as you normally would

Same with Regular enter as elite Regular,  with the course name VT challegen Regular

Enter your regular jump height!

Nope, we've got all that information in our files :)

Probably this evening or Monday everyone who has submitted videos so far will get a confirmation email to make sure the info we have listed is accurate

Oh coolio!
I just sent in Jumpers...r1/2 was a good jam for us, 3/4 i kept confusing her (and myself) so it's like watching molasses run slowly as it tumbles over itself ;D enjoy!
All in all, fun, and showed me we are better than I thought, which was a nice surprise :)
We are on rest for a gimp now, so no regulars will happen.

I hope NADAC does this again some time!

I was waiting to submit them all at once as there was something on FB about how they wanted it all at once.  Should we not wait?  We have all of the regulars done (did that Thursday evening).  Going to do jumpers tomorrow night.

It just makes it a little simpler for the reviewers, since with the challenge videos they are also putting everything into another file for scoring.  So if all the runs come in a single batch they don't have to jump around as much :)

Well thanks again for offering the VT challenge. It was great fun. However, if we decided not to send in all our run to join the actual Challenge but would like them reviewed just for normal VT Qís will we need to wait for them to be Judge with the Challenge group because they are labeled VT Challenge or will it be sooner. Hoping to earn Natch 2 & V- Natch 2 with my jumpers runs 😃

Anything that is coming in ran on the VT Challenge courses are being reviewed, scored, and Q'ed as such.  If you only sent in 1 or 2 we still had to score them because we had no idea if you were sending in 1 or 4.

We had a HUGE internet issue today so we are now quite behind.  I should now be able to go certify as a CAT5 wiring expert :P
Anyways... we will get caught back up hopefully by tomorrow night with what has been submitted.  Sorry for the delays!

It's a bummer that we didn't think to label them differently for the challenge. An actual course name for individual runs and VT Challenge if you were submitting all 4. Next time! Thanks for all your hard work reviewing!

I think I still have some Cat 5 wire strippers as well as the little gizmo that lights up to tell you if you have the wires matched correctly, from when I was the techie at the elementary school.  Need me to send them to you? 😍

Awww. I thought r1/2 was fast enough but we NQd all four. Is there a way to know how much time I missed by? Using the sct calculator i had a second to spare and second and half on the other.
3/4 confused hell out of me. I swear we ran them right but i have a missed obstacle of four. Whoops! Can I know which? I guess I am so dyslexic even looking at the video knowing that I cant tell where I went wrong.

(Im not Questioning the results, i just want to know how close i was and my brain isnt processing the pattern right to see the booble!)

Anyway. Still did better than i thought we would as i figured I would mess up far more than I did. :D and my pup stuck it out with me.  ;D

Eta: i have gone over rd 4 crazy number times and cant see where i went wrong. I had a MACH friend look at it and she agrees we did it correctly. I am on jump 22 at finish jump as course states. So i dont know why it was marked a missed obstacle, when i had all 22? I am wondering if the end confused people where I got confused. I was trying to send an extra jump i realised it and pulled her off before making the jump, but it is from the same pattern where the first serpy thing up you do take it. But not second time. I remebered just in time the second time!! But it kinda looks like a miss, really it was saving our wigglebutts haha!

Eta2: figured out the time. I forgot to subtract a yard. Darnit. So close!

Thank you SO MUCH for this Challenge!  We know this is a lot of work for you, and we all appreciate your efforts!

We had a wonderful time running it Saturday- the dogs were so happy to have full courses to run- for some it was the first time out since March when classes and trials were canceled.  Apparently we all have some re-calibrating to do after the break.

Us humans had a chance to practice some safe distancing in a "trial" situation with a few of our club members, and I'm pleased to say we all handled it well.  It was a great excuse to see each other and talk about how we will handle covid19 precautions at our future trials.

PS I apologize for tacking 2 Hoopers runs onto my Challenge batch, but I ran them last week and had to get them submitted before their deadline.

No reason why those without contacts canít just compete in the Jumpers! Just do it! Wish you could come to my place for the contacts. I live in LA. Lower Alabama!

There is also a problem of space.  City folks don't have space to set a course, and training facilities are still closed. So unless Chris would let us set 3 obstacles, video, set the next 3, video....LOL.  We all have different challenges.
Have fun.  Someday the rest of us will have out dogs out on a course.

Are you going to do this again?  Maybe we will all be better organized.

I hope they do it again! Maybe having a week would be nice but i understand wanting a weekend. Or do regular one weekend jumpers next.
