Title: Championships Cancellation Questions
Post by: Chris Nelson on July 02, 2020, 09:40:11 AM
Hey All,

I took the day yesterday to feel sad for myself and everyone else missing champs, but it's back to work today, so I've got a few questions I've seen floating around that we'll answer here, as well as some more detailed explanations.

1) Will Champs be on the west coast in 2021?
Sadly the answer is no.      Our contracts for both our west and east coast facilities are booked on a rotating basis for the 'skipped' years.   So Gillette always has us on the even years, 2020, 2022, 2024, 2026 etc.   And Springfield has us on the odd years, 2019, 2021, 2023, 2025, etc.

So the real issue, is that on the years that we aren't at those places, the dates are reserved for other events.    So if we were to hold Champs in Gillette in 2021, it would be a challenge getting that date, and then it would also mess up our reservations for 2022 since we don't historically have that date in Springfield.

And the fact is no matter what happens, it's going to suck for either the west or east.   If we hold it on the East coast, the west has to travel farther, or just can't go at all because of the distance and you guys essentially miss 2 years.

But, if we hold it on the west coast, then it's that exact same issue just for the east coast people now.    so there is no way to win on this one.    And with all the difficulties we've had in the past with getting decent dates reserved, I'm really not comfortable with risking losing them, since that would really affect everyone for an even longer period of time.

2) If I qualified in 2020, will I still be invited for 2021?

If you met the normal qualification guidelines, then absolutely!  We would definitely extend that invitation to the following year.

3) Will my Regional win count for 2021?

The plan for 2020 was that all regional wins would be for that year only, so Gillette in 2020 only.
But with the issues surrounding us this year we'll be extending any regional byes and invitations out to 2021 as well.

Those are the big ones I've seen so far, but if you guys have any more questions feel free to ask :)

Yes it stinks.  And yes, like most, I'm feeling really down about it.  But I'm very thankful that NADAC has made the adult decision.  I was currently bouncing back and forth between how I could go safely - and making that adult decision on my own.  Have to say the "adult" wasn't presently winning out.  So thank you for sparing me from myself.

As for the West Coast East Coast issue.  In the long run it is definitely a better choice to know in advance where Champs is going to be held each year.  And to have those decisions already in place takes so much burden off of NADAC to have to come up with something different every year. That energy can well be spent elsewhere.

Thanks for your diligence in seeking input and for keeping us informed.

The Champions Center in Springfield, OH has NADAC on the calendar for October 5-10, 2021.  I'm sure Chris will let us know if this changes.

Margaret is correct for the dates :)

It's pretty much 100% at this point they will stay there.    They were working pretty hard to try and get a horse show from September moved to our October date, but it just doesn't seem to be in the cards

Thanks so much for extending the qualifying to 2021.  It was going to be really tough to qualify again given how few trials we will be having.  We don't normally have many trials from October thru May and I dont have much hope for any indoor trials this winter.

I'll be really happy to see 2020 out the door.

Hey, Chris!

Just throwing out a money making idea I had. Since we can't go to Champs, but many of us were planning on attending--  Would you be up for making like an honorary Champs 2020 shirt for us with our dogs name on it with a logo, etc?  We can still wear them when we compete and help you and your company and NADAC make money.

Oh I like this idea.  I would gladly pay for a Champs 2020 shirt - including postage.

I'm sure we could come up with something!   We never ended up getting the final logo done, but I'll see what we can come up with :)

There used to be a TV show called That Was the Year that Was.  So cute to use That Was the Year that Wasn't.

I like "The year that Wasn't"  Probably better than "The Suckiest Year Ever"  I also like "2020 Champs...NO Dropped Bars"  or "2020 Champs....NO Missed Contacts" or "2020 Champs...The Year EVERY Dog ran PERFECTLY"   ;)

I like the more positive ones!  Cheryl had some great ones!  The year that wasn't is not positive in my opinion.

So if a dog qualified for Champs, as well as qualified for starter stakes, all those carry over? I'm hoping Roxie will still be sound enough to run if I can swing going east next year as it'll be her last Champs since this year is out.
Thanks for making tough decisions, it's not easy.

Yup!   It's all pretty uncharted territory, so for the time being it seems like the best course of action.

I completely support the horribly difficult decision you were forced to make to cancel champs this year. And as much as I would love for champs to be in Gillette in 2021 (since Iím out west) I understand how difficult it would be with your rotating reservations in Ohio and Wyoming. And to say that if you were able to hold champs in Gillette in 2021 it would be the same issue, but just for the east coast people, is true, but it would sorta even things out. For east coast people who donít travel nothing will changed, they get to attend champs every other year (theoretically...who knows what next year will bring). But for west coast people who donít travel it will be 4 years between champs for them. And as someone with a double digit dog from 2018 to 2022 is a really really really long time. If it were possible to hold champs in Gillette in 2021 then for east coasters who donít travel it would be 3 years between champs (2019-2022) and for west coasters who donít travel it would also be 3 years between champs (2018-2021). You are right, no matter what, it sucks for everyone. And again, I support the tough decision you had to make and understand why itís not feasible to hold champs in Gillette in 2021. And YES some 2020 Champs shirts would be awesome!
