THANK YOU for posting this video with your dogs that at different overall skill levels . . . it really highlights just how easy it is to teach the barrel performance . . . and it also illustrates how superior the path that the dog chooses around the barrel for him/herself is FAR superior to the imposed path of a C/U-shaped tunnel!!!

thanks for showing the use of barrel in your mini course.  It was great to see how the dogs just dug around the barrel with enthusiasm and speed.  It looks like fun to work on with the pups.  I am looking forward to it.

And as  side note,  my dogs have had limited exposure to 'barrels'.   Syn has seen barrels twice in competition and once in training.... but since she was 8 weeks old, I have sent her around 'stuff'.      Tandem has seen barrels three times  in competition (once including EGC), and again since he was 8 weeks old, he learned to go around things.  Dynamic has seen barrels once in EGC.    Since i got her when she was over 1 year old, she doesn't have the foundation that Syn and Tandem have had.       

You can clearly see that it is not difficult to teach them to go around something.   I threw my ball a few times for Dy and Tandem around the barrel then moved on the sequence.

Thanks for posting!  How in the world is it that the other dog just stands there and watches?  I have to train one at a time.  The other one goes in the house or else I'm training double (they do the obstacles together).  While tandem agility is fun to watch, it isn't always safe (dog walk!).

Thanks for posting the video it helped to see it "in use" since my guys have not seen barrels (but once).  Question (this is not about the topic of obstacles vs paths - LOLOLOL) but what do you call the barrel or tell them when you are sending them out there?

In other words when the dog perhaps has options of obstacles out on a Regular course and I just say "out", often that could be many obstacles.

So when I start to teach it - what should I be telling them??

For a "command" I use "round"............ the first plan was "around" but the "a" never made it!!  So I use "go round" or "out round" or "switch round"............... seems to work!!

I have been putting some thought into that question.   I am going to teach a command that means go out and around the barrel and another separate command that means come in switch around the barrel.   I will probably stick with my "ARound' the barrel to mean out and around and I have always done this with going around stuff.

Got no time to say 'in switch around'  so will be teaching a separate verbal cue for that one.

In my video, I only did out arounds as I am comfortable with that word and that performance.  YES  I can draw the path better and get the In Switch around,  but want to train that with my new word first.

Yes, definitely!   Right now they are mostly "bi-directional" but eventually a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction will be required.

I was going to use just an "around", however I've taught my "around" as a wrap command (do a "U" turn quickly and come back towards me).  Does that make sense?  So I did get a collapsible barrel yesterday and tried it and as soon as I gave the "around" they peeled off the barrel and came right back towards me.

Think they can learn the one word has two meanings??  I did keep my arm out and kept facing the barrel....

"We" see it as two different things, but it is the same behavior to the dog.... go to the object and make a tight circle......... they will love the part where the same behavior can be used in multiple scenarios.... it just confirms what they already know and makes them feel that much better about themselves!
