Double Digit Dogs at Champs
« on: July 16, 2012, 10:16:23 PM »
I have heard through the grapevine, that Double Digit dogs will need to take the height reduction for Veterans (of course), but that they will also be required to take the second height reduction for Skilled. So a 16" proficient double digit dog will have to jump 8" at Champs -- true? My dog will have just become a Double Digit a few weeks before Champs so I haven't yet done the second height reduction -- I know in time that will be required at, what was it, age 11?

Thanks,
Lynn Saunders

Hi, Lynn
You have actually asked two different questions.   First a Double Digit dog at Champs is any dog that is age 10 or older.  Handlers do not have a choice with that..... if a dog is entered in Championships and they are 10 years old, then they are in the Double Digit division.
The second part of your question is about the age of dogs at regular weekend trials.  As of Jan. 1, 2014 any dog over 8 years old must run as a Veteran dog.  Any dog over 11 years old must run as a Skilled Veteran dog.
So there are two answers to your combined question and they are separate answers!  I hope this helps.

Could the 8 year old dog choose to take the 4" reduction in jump height by being in Skilled instead of Veteran Dog?  And then do Skilled Vet at 11?

They must be declared a Veteran... they could "also" enter Skilled at age eight and take a double reduction, but the Veteran status must be declared after 2014 for the 8+ aged dogs.

As a theoretical question, what about 11 year old dogs who are under 10 inches tall?  Once they run as a vet they are down to 4 inches so is there an advantage or reason to go skilled at 11?  I get that maybe they just do as you can't go lower than 4 inches and the rule works for all other heights

I did split this topic into two topics..... Double Digit Dogs at Champs and Veteran dog questions.

We are answering a lot of "veteran dog" questions on the subject line "Double Digit Dogs at Champs" and they really are two different topics.

So I will answer any questions that people have about Veteran dogs on that topic line and not here on the Champs questions.... or someone will quote an answer here someday and refer to it as "champs" rules!!
